  • •Dr. Sushanta Kumar Panigrahi received his PhD from Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee in 2009. He worked as Post Doctoral Research Fellow at Missouri University of Science & Technology, Missouri , USA from 2009 to 2012 before joining IIT Madras. He was also a Visiting Professor at Ecole Centrale Nantes, France during May-June 2016 and 2022.
  • •He has established Innovative Material Processing (IMP) Lab at IIT Madras. The key focus of this lab is to establish science and technology of Magnesium, Aluminium and Titanium Manufacturing via IMP routes such as Innovative casting, innovative forming, innovative solid state joining, innovative sintering, innovative heat treatment, innovative powder processing etc. with key objectives as: (i) to establish high performance manufacturing route; (ii) to enhance custom specific properties of end products; (iii) to optimize structural efficiency; (iv) near net shaped manufacturing routes; (v) to develop engineered Mg and Al based alloys and composites etc.
  • • His research interest includes: (i) Development/Manufacturing of advanced materials; their fundamental science and manufacturability (Bulk ultrafine/nano grained materials, Metal matrix/Nano composites, In-situ composites, Ultrafine grained in-situ/ex-situ composites, High strength light weight Al, Mg and Ti based metallic materials, Materials as per design etc., Structure-Property-Manufacturability (Machining/Forming/Joining) correlation of such developed materials) ; (ii) Innovative Material Processing (IMP) for improving manufacturability and property enhancement (Solid state, semi solid state and liquid state IMP; Microwave IMP; Severe plastic deformation…); Microstructure-Texture-Processing correlation); (iii) Advanced Metal Forming (Bulk and sheet metal forming, Severe plastic deformation, Microforming, Incremental forming and Superplastic forming, Microstructure-Crystallography texture – Property- Formability correlation); (iv) High performance single metallic, bi-metallic, multi-metallic sheet development via solid state joining and cladding technologies; (v)Plasticity and deformation behavior of materials (Deformation behavior under Quasistatic, Dynamic and Cyclic testing domain at sub-zero to high temperature range, Processing map development) and (vi) Solid state processing and joining of similar/dissimilar materials (Friction stir processing/welding, Roll bonding etc.).
  • •He has published 97 papers in peer reviewed international SCI journals (as on 30th Sept 23) with average impact factor of 6.2. His publications received more than 3600 citations and his Scopus h index of 35. He has also 6 book chapters to his credit.
  • •He has established nine patented technologies.
  • •He has been actively associated with sponsored projects with different funding agencies like; DST, ISRO, DRDO, DSIR, MHRD, DHI, Mahindra & Mahindra, Renault Nissan, Magnesium Elektron North America, Titan Company Ltd, HINDALCO-Aditya Birla Group, Rane NSK Steering System etc..

  3. Recipient of more than 20 funded/sponsored projects. Among them few most prestigious sponsored projects are: IMPRINT Project, DST-SUPRA Project, DST-Advanced Manufacturing Technology (AMT). All these projects are Under MAKE IN INDIA Scheme and Dr. S.K. Panigrahi is the Principal Investigator.
  4. Successful in publishing research work in many prestigious journals with high impact factor (IF).   5. Best paper award to Bheemreddy Prathyusha and S.K. Panigrahi for the paper titled “Development of high bond strength Al/Cu bimetallic sheets by an innovative hybrid manufacturing process” at 4th International Conference and Expo on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering during 28-30 September 2023, organized by ASM International.
  6. Best poster award to Vidya Tiwari and S.K. Panigrahi for the paper titled “A Novel Approach to Overcome Casting Based Challenges in Magnesium Alloys” at 4th International Conference and Expo on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering during 28-30 September 2023, organized by ASM International.
  7. Sri R Krishnamurthy Endowment Award to Dr. Suman Deb (PhD student of Dr. S.K. Panigrahi; Currently Dr. Suman is a faculty in IIT Bhubaneswar) in July 2021 for best PhD thesis in the area of Advanced Materials, Surface Engineering, Coating and Treatments (received on Convocation Day).
  8. S. Anantharamakrishnan Merit Award to Mr. Adish R (M.Tech student of Dr. S.K. Panigrahi) on the Convocation Day in 2021 (for best M.Tech project in Mechanical Engineering for the year 2021). This award is for best individual M.Tech project in Mechanical Engineering Department (including design, thermal, manufacturing and automotive) during June 2020-May 2021.
  9. Best paper awards to Bheemreddy Prathyusha (1st) and Rakesh Kumar (2nd) (Both are PhD scholars of Dr. S.K. Panigrahi) at Sixth Asian Conference and Expo on Heat Treatment and Surface Engineering during 3-5 March 2020, organized by Jointly “International Federation of Heat Treatment & Surface Engineering along with ASM International.
