| B.Tech

The Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech) programme in Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras is a four-year undergraduate programme that provides students with a strong foundation in engineering science, design, analysis, manufacturing, thermal sciences, and related areas. Admission to the B.Tech programme is through the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE Main and JEE Advanced), and branch allotment is decided through the Joint Admission Committee.

The curriculum for the B.Tech 2026 batch is structured across all four years and is listed in the table below. The table includes semester-wise courses, semester credits, electives, honours options, and internship/project-related components. Academic matters such as admissions, assessment procedures, grading, and programme requirements are governed by the Institute Ordinances and Regulations. The academic rules governing the B.Tech programme are available here: B.Tech Ordinances 2015

  • Undergraduate projects: To develop an appreciation of research and the environment in which it is carried out, final-year undergraduate students are encouraged to undertake either a six-month or one-year B.Tech Project (BTP) under faculty guidance. They may also opt for a three-month mini-BTP.
  • Industrial training: Mechanical Engineering students are required to complete two months of monitored industrial training in addition to their four years of academic study before becoming professional engineers. Industrial training is organized during the summer vacation at the end of the 3rd and 5th semesters. The department provides a sponsorship list of companies that offer industrial training.
