|Candidacy Exam (From July 2025)

All PhD students of the department are required to take the Candidacy examination one year after joining. It is required to pass this exam to continue further research. Few guidelines on the modalities of the Candidacy examination procedure are given below.

Guidelines for the Ph.D. Candidacy Written and Oral Examinations:


Candidacy Written Examination:
  • The examination consists of three papers:
    • One compulsory paper in Engineering Mathematics (stream-wise)
    • Two elective papers chosen based on your stream (not for IDRP Students)
  • Each paper will test fundamentals and will be set for a one-hour exam, with three hours allowed for completion.
  • Waivers may be granted for one, two, or all three papers if you have earned an S or A grade in equivalent courses.
  • A minimum score of 50% in each paper is required to qualify for the oral exam.
  • You will be provided two attempts to clear the written examination.

Candidacy Oral Examination (Viva)
  • This will test your knowledge in your research domain.
  • You will present a comprehensive literature review for 20 minutes, followed by an oral exam of one hour.
  • The guide will be present during the oral exam but will not be part of the examination committee.
  • The committee will decide pass/fail by simple majority and provide feedback in case of failure in the first attempt.
  • You will have two attempts to clear the oral examination.
  • If unsuccessful, registration will be terminated, with the option to convert to the M.S. programme as decided by the DC.
