Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras. The Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras is as old as the Institute itself. The department has close to 65 faculty members working in various advanced areas of research and development. Currently, the department offers an undergraduate program in Mechanical Engineering and three Master's programs in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Design and Thermal Engineering. The department is engaged in high-quality research in various inter-disciplinary areas through its Master of Science (Research) and Ph.D programs. The department boasts a highly successful line of Alumni making a huge impact in various spheres in the society.
The Mechanical Engineering Department at IIT Madras collaborates with a number of core engineering companies such as Hindustan Unilever, ITC Limited, Caterpillar India Private Ltd., Wipro Consumer Care and Lighting, Tata Steel, P&G, Bajaj Auto Limited, General Electric, Boeing International, and Tata Research Development and Design Centre, among others; thus providing abundant internships opportunities for students. The department also engages in cutting-edge research activities in collaboration with several national research labs and instutions.
Mechanical Engineering is one of the most distinct and multi-faceted engineering disciplines. A mechanical engineer uses the basic principles of physics/ mathematics and materials science and good problem-solving skills to design, manufacture, and market various products. The discipline is at the forefront of creating new technologies serving human needs. Almost all products and services in the domain of healthcare, energy, transportation, space exploration, and even climate change are touched by Mechanical Engineering. Mechanical Engineers constantly strive to deliver safe, efficient, and reliable products, but at a lower cost.
