Dr. A. K. Varma is presently working as Professor of Practice in the mechanical engineering department at IIT Madras Chennai.
He did his post-graduate studies in Aerospace at IIT, Madras after completing graduation in mechanical engineering. Thereafter he obtained PhD in mechanical engineering from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He has worked in the research and design center of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited for over three and a half decade heading its R&D center at Lucknow for over a decade. During this period, a large number of products were designed & developed for various aircraft including Advance Light Helicopter, Light Combat Aircraft and Intermediate Jet Trainer programmes. He was given the award for Excellence in Design in 1998 by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam at the Aeronautics Research and Development Seminar held at Bangalore. He superannuated as General Manager, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited Lucknow. Subsequently Dr. Varma was full time Visiting Professor at IIT Kanpur and thereafter Director and Professor, Institute of Technology at Shri Ramswaroop Memorial University Lucknow.
Dr. Varma has been in the review boards for projects at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Bombay, Naval Science & Technological Laboratory, Vishakhapatnam, Center for Airborne Systems, Bangalore and other government sectors in addition to high level aerospace development programme monitoring and steering bodies. He has contributed technical papers on Turbo-machines in various conference and Journals. He has been a member of the Senate at IIT-Kanpur from 2010-to-‘12.
The technical specifications occupies centre-stage in product design and development. Though the functional requirements of a product is the foundation of its technical specifications, this however constitutes only a part of the technical specifications of the product. The sustainability of the product functionality, during its service life, is largely influenced by the conditions of environment, mechanical strength, life and transportation. These parameters must therefore form integral part of the specifications and defined to standards. The standards of environmental testing are intended to be used to achieve uniformity and reproducibility in the test procedure. The engineering design of the product taken up subsequent to freezing of technical specifications must, as a matter of requirement, use standards of raw materials, fits & tolerance, manufacturing processes etc. to ensure that the identity of the product to its technical specifications is maintained over any number of pieces produced. The beauty of product design therefore lies in using standards. This talk is therefore planned to cover all of the above aspects of product design apart from sharing some of my experiences of working on design & development projects
