Welcome to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras. Mechanical engineering is ubiquitous and every product or system that is used in the world has mechanical engineering behind it, in all its glory! Over and above this, each of these products needs a machine to make it. Mechanical engineering has not only powered the world with a range of power plant technologies that include traditional fossil fuels, renewables and hybrid power technologies, but have also played a pivotal role in mobility technologies that include automobiles, trains, aircrafts, helicopters and so on. Advances in space technologies would not have been possible without mechanical engineering
